Migraine
could be simply defined as the experience of extreme headaches followed with
the feeling of nausea and vomiting. Migraine headaches very often occur during
childhood, adolescence or the early adulthood. Migraine attacks may be
categorized into four stages, such as prodrome, aura, headache and postdrome,
though it is not mandatory that you may experience all the stages.
Prodrome
Prior to the migraine attack you may
experience following signs:
- Constipation
- Depression
- Cravings for certain food
- Stiffness in neck
- Excessive yawning
- Irritability
Aura
This stage might occur before or during
migraine headaches. Auras are usually the visual disturbances, such as
experiencing flashes of light, auras can also occur in sensory, motor or verbal
disturbances. Majority of the people experience migraine attacks without aura. The
symptoms begin gradually, and last for 20 to 60 minutes. The aura might
include:
- Seeing shapes, flashes of light and bright spots (visual disturbances)
- Tingling sensation in arm or leg
- Verbal problem
Attack
If untreated a migraine attack usually lasts
from 4 to 72 hours, but the intensity in which the headache occurs varies from
person to person. You might experience migraines several times in a month or
less often. During the migraine attack, you may experience the following
symptoms:
- Excruciating pain on one side or both sides of your head
- Pulsating and throbbing pain
- Sensitivity to light, sounds and smells
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
Postdrome
This final stage is known as postdrome, which
appears right after the migraine attack. During this time the individual might
feel completely drained out, though few people have reported to feel mildly
euphoric.
Any specific theory is not established related
to the cause that triggers the migraine attack. Migraine might be inherited and
could be caused due to several other biological and environmental factors.
Following are the factors which are widely known to trigger migraine:
- Foods- Migraine is known to be triggered due to the consumption of cheeses, preserved food, salty foods and processed food. Skipping meals or fasting can also cause migraine.
- Drinks- Drinks with high caffeine value, alcohol may trigger migraines
- Stress- Stressing too much at work or home can trigger migraines.
- Changes in waking up or sleeping pattern- Irregular sleeping patterns, excessive or too little sleep can cause migraine
- Physical factors- Intense exertion, including sexual activity, might provoke migraines.
- Environmental Changes- A change of weather or barometric pressure might cause migraine attack.
