Bipolar disorder
is also known as the “manic-depressive disorder” which is recognized by mood
swings, ranging from low depression to high mania. The feeling of depression

The
symptoms of bipolar disorder may differ from person to person such as, some people,
depression creates the major problem; and for others people mania becomes the

occur together; this is known as a mixed episode.

- Seasonal changes in mood- People with bipolar mood disorder and “seasonal affective disorder” (SAD), tend to experience mania or hypomania according to season, such as extreme mania during summers or winters, people experience such seasonal cycles and these cycles may vary from person to person.
- Rapid cycling bipolar disorder- Some people with bipolar mood disorder experience swift mood shifts. This is defined through experiencing four or more mood swings in one single year. However, in some cases mood shifts might occur much more quickly, sometimes within few hours.
- Psychosis- Severe episodes of mania or depression might result in psychosis, as surrender from reality. Symptoms of psychosis may include delusions (false and strongly held beliefs) and hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that aren't present).
Symptoms in children and adolescents
Bipolar
disorder does not instantly starts with the mania or hypomania; it first occurs
as extremely strong mood swings such as mood shifts, explosive temper,
aggression, reckless behavior and crying. These mood swings might last for few
